Chapter History

The Ohio Gamma Chapter at The Ohio State University was founded on January 30, 1908.

In our years at Ohio State , we have seen many significant awards from the university. In the early 2000s, Sigma Phi Epsilon became the first Greek-letter organization at Ohio State to be selected as "Outstanding Student Organization" in several decades, recognized out of more than 1,000 registered student organizations.

National History

The Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity was founded at Richmond College, now the University of Richmond, on November 1, 1901, based upon the Cardinal Principles of Virtue, Diligence, and Brotherly Love. The twelve founders of this fraternity sought to return to the true ideals of the Greek community, and since then SigEp has grown to over 260,000 lifetime members, including almost 15,000 undergraduates on more than 260 campuses in the United States, making it the largest fraternity in terms of undergraduate enrollment. In recent decades, SigEp has recruited more men than any other collegiate fraternity while simultaneously maintaining the highest first-year member retention rate (over 90%) of any national fraternity.

Former Grand Chapter President William Tragos' speech, Beyond Phi Beta Kappa, set national fraternity goals of demolishing the negative stereotypes that plague the Greek community, rebuilding fraternity life into valued institutions solidly founded in high ideals, focusing on the development of a sound mind in a sound body through the Balanced Man Program.

Chapter Home - 1943 Waldeck

Chapter House

Our chapter house is the main hub of activity for the fraternity, housing members and hosting many guests and events. While the house is owned by the fraternity, it is managed through the university, which means housekeeping, maintenance, and furniture is provided by Ohio State and rent and fees are billed through the university statement of account.

Our chapter facility is accredited by the national fraternity as a Residential Learning Community, our facility has policies against the presence of alcohol in all common areas and academic spaces. In addition to these policies, we have a study room specifically dedicated to academics. It is equipped with various equipment to benefit undergraduate students.

Access to the house is granted through the BuckID card 24 hours a day throughout the entire academic year. Our house is full of amenities that are available to all of our members, including:

  • Weight Room & Study Room with High Speed Internet
  • Living Room with 65” Flat-Screen TV, Digital Cable and Pool Table
  • Sand Volleyball Court
  • Industrial Kitchen
  • Laundry Room
  • Housekeeping & Professional Maintenance
We also have 28 individual bedrooms with corridor baths for those members who choose to live in the house that come full furnished.

One distinguishing feature of our chapter home is the bright red doors visible on nearly every Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter house. The tradition of the red door began at Syracuse University, New York Alpha Chapter, in the 1920s as a way to symbol to other brothers that they were welcome and safe inside the Chapter House. As one of the predominant symbols of Sigma Phi Epsilon, brothers from around the country know wherever they find a red door, they are welcome enjoy the brotherhood and hospitality of fellow SigEps.
